The Buying Power of Pell Is Decreasing
The Pell Grant is the nation’s foundational investment in higher education and helps nearly seven million students attend and complete college annually. Doubling the maximum Pell Grant will help more students earn a degree, get a good-paying job, and ensure them greater economic mobility.
Nearly 7 million of our nation’s students rely on federal Pell Grants to help them access and attain a higher education.
Nearly 50 years ago, the maximum grant covered more than three-quarters of the cost of attending a four-year public college—but that has declined to less than 1/3.
Nearly 90% of Pell Grant dollars go to students with a family income of below $50,000.
Nearly 60% of Black students, and roughly half of American Indian or Alaska Native and Hispanic students receive a Pell Grant each year.
About 50% of student parents and first-generation college students are Pell Grant recipients.
Nearly 40% of student veterans are Pell Grant recipients.
